Abstract

Background: Petrol is an integral ingredient of the modern industrial world. But are we ignoring the health hazards associated with long term exposure to petrol fumes? People with higher risk of exposure to petrol vapors. The present study is an attempt to establish the possible deleterious effect of long term exposure to petrol fumes on white blood corpuscles. Methods:The study was carried out in 30 adult male volunteers who had been working in a petrol pump as attendants for more than 5 years. Study was conducted in a petrol pump in Pune city in India. The control group consisted of adult male of the age group 25-45 years who didn’t have the history of occupational exposure to petrol. For the investigation 5ml of venous blood is collected from peripheral vein (median cubital vein) and immediately transferred to anticoagulant bottle.. Total Leucocyte count and Differential leucocyte count was done. Student’s‘t’ test is applied to test difference between study and control groups for different parameters.Result:The study showed a statistically significant reduction in the total leucocyte count and lymphocyte percentage where as there was an increase in neutrophil and eosinophil percentage ( p< 0.001).Conclusion: Observed reduction in the total WBC count and lymphocyte count in our study may be attributed to the cytotoxic effect of compounds present in petrol. Increased neutrophil and eosinophi  percentage can be due to predisposition of the individuals to various infection because of  immunosuppression.
